They wanted to get married at Christmas before they actually got married, but Sid’s father said no. He thought they were to young. They were both quite upset over this.
The blitz was going very hard over London at that time. Once, it went on all night long and Dot’s house was bombed. -“In the ambulance as we were driving around picking up casualties, I saw the shop, where Sid’s mother and father were”, Dot says –“and it had been hit by a bomb. I knew that Sid, sometimes, would not go to the shelter, and I thought; “God if he has not gone to the shelter, that is him gone.” My driver passed and we saw his mother and she told us, that for first time, he had gone to the shelter. He was alright, he had just gone around to the centre where my ambulance was, to see if I was alright”. That morning Sid were suppose to meet with his band in Marble Arch, in the centre of London, get on the coach with the band and to go to Manchester. They were going to do a Sunday concert, a one night show, how they ever got there was a mystery! They hitch-hiked, they got on a bus where they could get on one, then they caught a train. The bombing made it extremely difficult to get on the train, but they made it, just at the point where they were about to give up.

De ville gifta sig julen innan de egentligen gifte sig, men Sids pappa sa nej, han tyckte de var för unga. De blev ganska upprörda över att de inte fick gifta sig. Bombräderna var mycket intensiva över London då, och en gång pågick de hela natten och Dots hem blev bombat. ”När vi körde omkring och hämtade skadade människor, såg jag att huset där Sids föräldrar bodde hade blivit bombat. Jag visste att Sid inte alltid ville gå ner i skyddsrummet så jag tänkte; nu har jag förlorat honom…. Vi åkte dit med ambulansen och träffade hans mamma som berättade, att detta var första gången han hade gått ner i skyddsrummet. Han var inte skadad, han hade bara gått till ambulanscentralen för att försäkra sig om att Dot också mådde bra. Den morgonen skulle Sid möta sitt band i Marble Arch i London, därför att de skulle till Manchester på en spelning. Manchester ligger långt bort från London. Det var en engångsspelning, en söndagskvälls konsert. Att dom över huvud kom dit var ett mirakel! Dom liftade, dom åkte buss när dom fick tillfälle till det, dom åkte tåg. Bombningarna gjorde det otroligt svårt att åka tåg, men dom lyckades komma på ett, precis när de var på vippen att ge upp.
As they sat in the coach going to Manchester they were talking about what a horrible worry it was the night before, and they decided, not to care about what Sid’s father said, they were going to get married, so that they could be together. Sid’s father said; ok, and they got married June 1941.
När de var på väg till Manchester pratade dom om hur fruktansvärt ångestladdat det varit natten innan, och dom bestämde sig att inte bry sig om vad Sids pappa sa, de tänkte gifta sig, så att de kunde få vara tillsammans. Sids pappa gav dem sin tillåtelse och de gifte sig juni 1941.
